Re-enactment Events

feast in Edinburgh

Feasts (normally held in February and November each year) involve eight to ten courses of early medieval food, as well as stories, music, games and dancing to add to the atmosphere.
The guests wear medieval costumes and use wooden or pottery bowls and cups.
Bread trenchers (slightly stale loaves, hollowed out to make a bowl) can also be used for food. In medieval times the bread trenchers, soaked in sauces from the feast, would be given to the poor after the event.

Members of Lothene often take part in displays at Scottish castles and other sites and also travel to re-enactment events all over Britain as well as occasionally providing film extras. They have also done promotional work for films such as "A Knights Tale" and "Eric the Viking" and for television series, such as the BBC's "Ivanhoe".
Young Archeologist wearing mailshirt The group also organise educational visits to local schools (Vikings are part of the Primary School syllabus) and put on displays at charity events.

The picture opposite was taken at a display Lothene put on for the Edinburgh Young Archaeologist Group. The children were able to get a close look at reproductions of historical costumes and archeological finds, as well as seeing how some things were made and even trying a mailshirt for size.
